Passive, implantable transponders have provided a reliable electronic solution for animal identification for decades. The micro-transponder, which is no bigger than a grain of rice and sits under the skin, contains a globally unique code that cannot be falsified. The number of codes available is greater than 500 billion. The passive transponder does not require a battery and therefore has an almost unlimited lifespan. There are two sizes to choose from with the Trovan system: the standard size with a diameter of 2.12 mm and, brand new, the smaller version with a diameter of 1.4 mm. These are more suitable for small animals because the cut through the needle is smaller. The reading range is only slightly smaller.
The transponder is activated by the reader using electromagnetic waves. It then transmits its code to the reader. Here the code is decoded, stored with date and time for further processing by a computer and shown on the LC display. The computer is connected via an RS232 or USB interface.
INJECTION: Each transponder is supplied individually, sterile-packed in a needle, ready for use.
The needle, with the transponder inside, is quickly inserted into the special injector via the Luer-Lock connection. This allows the user to perform many injections per hour.
The needle forms a puncture channel with its special double cut. A core rod (stylet) is located inside the needle. Together with the injector, this ensures that the transponder is held in position.
The tissue behind the transponder closes immediately. A small incision of approx. 2.6 or 2 mm remains, which heals quickly and without complications.
Disposable and reusable injectors are available.
